BGS and the Military

The Bachelor of Arts in General Studies (BGS) is known for being military friendly.  In fact, the program has received recognition for multiple years as being a “military friendly school” in the “G.I. Jobs Guide to Military Friendly Schools.”

WIU has been selected multiple years as a “Best for Vets College” by Military Times EDGE magazine.    WIU is the only Illinois 4year university in the top 25.

Dr. Richard Carter, Executive Director of the School of Distance Learning, International Studies, and Outreach which houses the Bachelor of Arts in General Studies degree, has been awarded the Council of College and Military Educators William E. Kennedy award.

WIU is one of the SOC (Servicemember Opportunity Colleges) that will accept all evaluated military training in accordance with ACE (the American Council on Education) guidelines.

WIU offers an outstanding Veteran’s Resource Center providing streamlined services and resources to all veterans, guard members, reservists, and active duty personnel.  Pay close attention to their website – it explains how it may be possible to earn academic credit for your military training and how to gain access to your military transcript.

Military personnel who have served one full calendar year (or more) full-time active duty and received an honorable discharge will be awarded 8 semester credit hours toward their degree. The 8 semester credit hours includes 2 semester credit hours for Personal Health Promotion (HE 120), 4 semester credit hours of Military Science elective, and 2 semester credit hours of Kinesiology elective.  We will need a DD-214 showing a minimum of 1yr active duty, and honorable discharge to award this specific credit.  A statement of service from your commanding officer will, also, suffice.

The BGS degree may be earned without campus attendance (completely online).  There is no time limit on transfer credit or to complete the degree, nor a minimum number of courses you must take a semester or year. The BGS degree has flexible degree requirements which allow for individualization and self designing ones own curriculum.

Veterans returning from at least one year of active military service who have received an honorable discharge will be admitted to Western Illinois University without regard to previous academic performance provided that WIU is the first school that the veteran attends after leaving the service. Applicants in this category are required to have graduated from a recognized high school or to have earned a High School Equivalency Certificate. Applicants must submit the same academic documents required of those not in this admission category. In addition, veterans must submit a copy of form DD-214.

These provisions also apply to individuals who have served for at least a year in VISTA, the Peace Corps, or similar programs.

Application fee is waived when application is submitted with a DD-214 or statement of service.
