The Minority Internship Program is a one semester paid internship sponsored by the Illinois Board of Higher Education. It allows FULL-TIME Junior and Senior students to combine work and learning experiences. Participants have the opportunity to interact with decision makers in their fields, develop personal interests, and expand career opportunities while earning credit.
The program is designed specifically for African American, Hispanic American, Asian American, Pacific Islander, Native American, and Alaskan Native students who are U.S. citizens or permanent U.S. residents.
To be eligible for the MIP, undergraduate students must be enrolled full-time (at least 12 s.h.) for Spring 2013 and have a cumulative GPA of 2.75. Students in the BGS degree program must enroll in UNIV 490 for 6 s.h. for a Summer term internship or 12 s.h. for a Fall semester internship semester. The internship itself must be unpaid, but students receive a $1,000 per month stipend from MIP.
Students enrolled in MIP attend monthly seminars, but students who are outside a reasonable travel distance may make arrangements for other options.
Students must locate their own specific internships, but please contact your advisor if you have questions concerning the general UNIV 490 internship. The BGS office strongly advises students to contact appropriate businesses and agencies in their areas to locate internships that will meet their needs. However, the office of Career Services recommends these websites as possible sources for internships: http://www.internweb.com/, http://www.multiculturaladvantage.com/internship.asp, . Note that competition for these internships is likely to be high. Again, the BGS office suggests that students look for (or work with a company or agency to create) their own local internships.
